For Japanese Language Schools:
- Generally, you do not need advanced Japanese skills to enter a Japanese language school.
- You are usually required to have studied at least 150 hours of Japanese or passed JLPT N5 level or an equivalent qualification such as J-CERT or JCT5 before applying for a student visa.
- Some schools may accept complete beginners, but having basic knowledge improves your chances of admission and visa approval.
For Universities (Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree Programs):
It depends on the program’s language of instruction:
Programs taught in Japanese:
- You usually need to pass JLPT N2 or N1, depending on the university and program.
- You may also need to take the EJU (Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students) if applying for an undergraduate program.
Programs taught in English:
- No Japanese proficiency is required.
- But you must provide English test scores like IELTS or PTE.

VFS Global processes visa applications on behalf of the Japanese Embassy. We help you prepare and submit your documents properly to ensure a smooth visa application process.
Typically, it takes around 1 to 3 months to receive your COE after submission.
